At ZenFestival Manila held yesterday in Makati City, Asus Philippines officially announced three new Android handset models under its very popular ZenFone series; One of which is the Asus ZenFone 2 Laser. Sidenote I was supposed to be at the event but I got stuck in traffic for more than three hours going from our house in Manila to Green Sun AXON in Chino Roces. It was terrible. And I still feel bad that I missed the chance to interview Mr. Jerry Shen who's one of the coolest tech CEO's ever. Hopefully, I'd finally get the chance to meet him in the next Asus event. Anyway, our country will be getting two variants of this particular release First is ZE550KL which has a HD IPS display. And second, we have ZE500KL sporting a 5-inch HD IPS panel. Both versions flaunt the exact same design identity - inspired by the 'arc' form factor of the original ZenFone 2 albeit lacking its 'brushed metal' back plate finish - with differences in heft and dimensions dictated by their screen size. Although smaller, ZE500KL's 5-inch screen is more 'pixel dense' as it has the same HD resolution of ZE550KL's panel. Both displays are protected by scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass 4 with oleophobic coating that has twice the drop-damage resistance of its predecessor, more than two and a half times the retained strength, and is 85% less likely to break in daily use. I would like to give credit to Intellect Digest for all photos in this entry. The two phones also share the same internal hardware - headlined by the Quad Core GHz ARM Cortex-A53 and Adreno 306 GPU based Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 chipset, 2GB of RAM for multitasking, and 16GB of expandable internal storage. Having a larger screen, ZE550KL also comes with a bigger 3,000 mAh battery pack while ZE500KL only has a smaller - albeit also removable - 2,070 mAh pack. Now, let's talk about the department where the Laser is supposed to excel Imaging. These two models have almost similar camera features including the f/ wide-aperture, zero shutter lag, and - of course - laser auto-focus technology that lets you capture crisp and clear images in just seconds. Likewise, both have Manual shooting mode allowing the user to tweak or fine tune ISO, shutter speed, focus, and exposure settings to his liking or depending on the shot's requirement. ZE550KL's 13 MegaPixel main shooter and ZE500KL's 8MP main cam also benefit from Asus' PixelMaster Low Light mode that uses what the company calls 'pixel-merging technology' to capture up to 400% brighter shots even at night or in low-light settings, without the need for a flash! But if you prefer to use flash, ZenFone 2 Laser comes equipped with Dual LED Real Tone flash ensuring warm skin-tone and more accurate color replication. ZenFone 2 Laser ZE550KL and ZE500KL's PixelMaster cameras also have Super HDR backlight mode and Pixel-enhancing technology to capture brilliant, vivid, and evenly-exposed photos even with challenging backlit scenes such as sunset portraits or if there's bright light source behind the subject. If you ask me which one you should get, I'd tell you that it all boils down to whether you prefer having a lighter, more pocket-friendly smartphone that's ideal for one-handed use or a large phablet that's great for thumb-typing and media consumption. I personally prefer the latter so I would suggest that you spend that additional thousand bucks and go for ZE550KL. But hey, that's just me. Let me know your thoughts about these two in the comments section below.
Tech Mobile The company refreshes its ZenFone 2 phone by adding laser autofocus for the camera as well as removable batteries. See full bio 2 min read Aloysius Low/CNET It's been barely six months since the Asus ZenFone 2 hit the markets, but the Taiwanese electronics giant will be phasing out Intel-powered Android smartphones in favor of a new range of devices equipped with Qualcomm processors instead. The first thing you'll notice about the Android Lollipop-powered ZenFone 2 Laser, is of course, the lack of sharks with lasers mounted on their heads. Instead, the phone comes with a laser autofocus system to help the camera focus on a subject faster. Apart from this addition, Asus has also made the battery removable. The phone feels and handles just like the ZenFone 2 and ZenFone Selfie , with the volume controls located below the camera on the rear. The power button is still awkwardly placed right at the top, making you stretch your fingers to reach it, although you can switch the screen on with a double tap. It also comes with a shiny metallic red rear, which is nice if you like your devices standing out from a sea of black or white phones. Asus shows off the ZenFone Go and ZenFone Laser pictures See all photos More importantly, however, is the switch to using Qualcomm processors for the phones instead of the Intel chips that were on the earlier ZenFone 2s. The Intel chipsets offered decent performance for a slight premium, but switching to Qualcomm feels like a downgrade, especially when you consider that the ZenFone 2 Laser is only running on the Snapdragon 410, while the 6-inch model gets the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 treatment. While I usually have no issues with phones powered by these processors, especially the Snapdragon 615, I worry that the ZenFone's bloated Zen UI software could lead to a sluggish performance that will hamper the user experience. This was the case with the ZenFone Selfie, which uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615, as I pointed out in my review . Otherwise, the ZenFone 2 Laser has respectable specs, though it's really dependant on which version you get. Asus has six different models of this phone, with three different screen sizes ranging from 5 to 6 inches. The highest-end one is the only one with a 6-inch full-HD 1,920x1,080-pixel display, while the rest sport HD - that's 1,280x720 pixels - screens. To help you out, I've made a table below with the specs as well as its recommended retail pricing in Asia. ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser Review; Still A Good Catch INTRODUCTION The new line of ZenFone devices was already unveiled locally about a few weeks ago and some of them are actually out now in the market. But, before we delve into the third generation ASUS smartphones, there are still a lot worthy ones from the previous iteration, a very good example is the ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser Come, join us as we dig deeper with what it has to offer in our comprehensive review. The ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser is the last generation from its bloodline, it is physically identical to its predecessor, making them share the same model number, which is ZE550KL. While on the inside, it is pretty much similar with variant, having 3GB of RAM and octa core Qualcomm processor. Given those facts, we can safely say it is a hybrid or a union of the two phones. PHYSICAL ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser Unboxing and Hands-on As mentioned above, its outer appearance is exactly the same as the original Laser from screen size resolution and quality are the same too, placement of the buttons, design and even dimensions, in short, they are identical twins. To learn more, you can read our ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser Review or watch the above unboxing video. SOFTWARE Software It is not just the tangible aspects that are the same with the and their software are pretty much similar, if not the same too! Both runs on Android Lollipop with ASUS ZenUI on top. The ZenUI offers tons of customization and features, which, according to ASUS, are more than 1000. Two of our favorites are the ZenMotion for touch gesture and one hand operation, and Kids Mode that allows you to control what particular apps a youngster can access. Of course, ZenUI is not for everybody, but proprietary UI like this one gives the device its own software identity. PERFORMANCE CPU-Z Info Under the hood comes the major upgrade of the "S" variant, it packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset that has octa core processor clocked up to paired with Adreno 405 GPU compared to the quad core and Adreno 306 GPU of its older sibling. The RAM has also increased from 2GB to 3GB. This simply means that Laser is more powerful than the Laser with raw processing power being doubled and 50% increase in volatile memory to handle more instructions. In terms of synthetic benchmarks, it is able to achieve the same results as other devices using the same chipset, such the ASUS ZenFone Selfie. Moreover, it is also able to match outcome of the MSM8939v2, or commonly known as Snapdragon 616, even if the latter has slightly higher frequencies. The scores are as follows Antutu - 41,077 Antutu - 37,218 Quadrant - 23,349 NenaMark2 - Geekbench - 623 single core Geekbench - 1,863 multi core PC Mark - 3,374 Vellamo Browser - 2,470 Vellamo Metal - 1,035 Vellamo Multicore - 1,791 Benchmark Results In real life usage, the handset performs well in handling day to day tasks, navigating in and out of the interface are smooth, even when there are multiple applications open in the background. Gaming wise, it can handle demanding titles without problems or difficulties, Modern Combat, Dead Trigger 2 and Asphalt 8 are all running at ease, even in high settings. Meanwhile, basic phone functionalities, namely calls and texts are working OK, individuals are able to hear each other on the line clearly. Moreover, signals are strong, we never experience dropped calls or cases where we are unable to send messages. In terms of multimedia capabilities, it is able to play 1080p videos of different codecs smoothly, sounds coming out are strong, thanks to its five-magnet speaker, and ASUS ZenEar bundled in the package provides above average audio output. By the way, out of the 32GB advertised internal storage, you only able to get access to upon completing the startup procedures. See Also ASUS Republic of Gamers Unleash New Gaming Laptops CAMERA Camera Interface Since the handset runs on ZenUI on top of the Android OS, the camera interface is practically the same with other ASUS devices that have the same skin, such as the ZenFone Selfie and the Laser Without HDR With HDR Without HDR With HDR Closeup The camera modules are also the same electronic pieces found on its predecessor, a 13MP f/ made by Toshiba at the back accompanied by a laser sensor for faster auto focus, and a 5MP wide-angle at the front for taking selfies. Surprisingly, the quality is better than the previous variant, at least under good lighting conditions, the output details are sharper, colors are more vivid and dynamic range is spot on. CONNECTIVITY The ZenFone 2 Laser sports dual SIM slots, each card can give you high speed data connectivity via LTE, but if you do not have a data plan and wants to save some, you can always relay on its WiFi. It also supports WiFi direct and wireless display, which is the norms these days. The USB port still uses the micro standard, fortunately it has on-the-go function, we have tested thumb drive and wireless mouse working fine. BATTERY Using the phone as our secondary driver usually gives us an uptime of about two days, that is one SIM card active used to communicate mostly with family members. Placing it under PC Mark test results in a score of more than 10 hours, that is similar number we got from the original Laser 2 which has the same 3000mAh battery. Meanwhile, continuous video playback with brightness and volume set to around 50% knocks the battery down in about hours. CONCLUSION The third generations of the ZenFone devices are already out in the market, but it does not mean previous iterations are less valuable, in fact, most of them are still worthy contenders. Take the ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser as a good example, it still has enough firepower to drive even the most demanding tasks, has good sets of cameras, long battery life and an affordable asking price. If fingerprint sensor and USB Type C are not your major concerns, then, it is still a good option to look at.
